Look and Make

Taking part in our art programmes at the Ulster Museum will provide your class with a memorable creative learning experience! We have in-depth subject knowledge and a wish to make art accessible to all. Each workshop is delivered in two parts. Look - taking time in the gallery to focus and discuss what you see. Make - trying out some new creative techniques to make your own artwork inspired by what you’ve seen. Choose a workshop theme from one of the options available… 

Key Activities

Let’s Go to the Pictures

Look: This is the go-to, all-purpose lesson for KS2 and KS3 classes: a highlights tour followed by a making session. As the art galleries are constantly changing this option guarantees that your class will not miss out on the best things at any given time. Make: Make art inspired by the gallery visit with an art education specialist.

Irish Artists at Home and Away

Look: A look at key paintings by Irish artists including Roderic O’Conor, Mainie Jellett, Paul Henry and Jack Yeats. In the gallery we will explore how artists use the visual elements to compose pictures. Looking at weather, light, scenery and the stories of the artists’ lives. Make: Follow up with a workshop making landscapes in mixed media.

Portraits and Personalities

Look: In this workshop, we will look at some of the different ways artists have made portraits. We will explore how people have presented themselves in the past and how we read status and personality into paintings. We will also discuss style, technique, the visual elements. Make: Everyone in the class will make a self-portrait using mixed media. Price: £60 per class Key Stage: Key Stages 2, 3 &4 Available to book: 3rd September 24 – 27th June 25
